Sharp

Last night I went to an open evening about some volunteering I am thinking of doing. I should have guessed the man who was running it was going to be a bit fierce when his letter said that it would start at “6.15pm sharp”. He very clearly and strongly laid out what the level of commitment was and basically made it sound like there was heavy competition to be able to do it and only the toughest would survive. One person pointed out that the postal strike might delay getting applications in to which the chap replied “That’s not my problem. If you really want to do this, you’ll find a solution to that.” For some strange reason, I am still interested in doing the volunteering, perhaps it is because if I ever got this chaps vote of approval at something I did it would feel like I had conquered Everest!

Just to show that I do have a soul (somewhere deep down), this story gave me a nice warm feeling. I think if I was them I might have given up a few years ago, but the youth of today obviously have more perseverance than me.

Glutton for punishment? Isn't volunteering supposed to come with large helpings of gratitude and appreciation?!

I help out at my local toy library, I'm a school governor, and I used to do pre-school committee, and Rainbows... And nobody was ever mean to me!

I'd tell the wanna be dictator where to shove his attitude!!! Fair enough you can't be too touchy feely but that sort of attitude will rankle in the long term

Sarah - I think you might need to have a word with this chap. I didn't get the impression that he attended many school fetes etc!

How do you find time to do all that activities and still manage to sleep, eat and, most importantly, read???

spudgy - I am thinking that I might warm to him at some point. I guess you would always know where you stand with him. I hope that doesn't mean me standing in the corner thought for being naughty.

The link didnt work for me...

Good on you for volunteering. I look forward to hearing more about it; esp. when you win that approval!

Kahless - That's strange, as I clicked it and it worked.

I am trying to finish the application form today because I know that if I get it in late, the chap will disqualify me!

If the guy truly wants people to volunteer their time and effort, he's going about encouraging that in the entirely wrong way!

Very cool of you to want to volunteer, though. :)

lifechick - bizarrely it didn't put me off putting in the form. I think he is one of those people that probably grows on you after a while.

I am still wondering if I am mad about wanting to do the volunteering, particularly as it will mean a lot of contact with this guy. But I figure if I can do this, I can do anything!

That's certainly true!
